iPadOS 16: Everything we know about new features, supported devices, and more

In short

  • WWDC 2022 will be held on June 6
  • iPadOS 16 will support most recent iPads
  • New notification and multitasking design coming soon

Let's go deeper

The WWDC 2022 will start in a couple of weeks and, almost certainly, Apple will announce iPadOS 16 on June 6, 2022, which will mark the next major release of Apple's operating system designed for iPad.

Below we summarize all the rumors collected so far about iPadOS 16, including new features, information on supported devices and more.

Let's go in order.

When will iPadOS 16 be announced?

iPadOS 16 will, as mentioned before, certainly be announced on June 6, during the WWDC 2022 keynote.

The event, like for two years now, will be online, with the exception of a few lucky students and developers who will be able to attend the keynote in person directly at Apple Park.

After the announcement, as usual, Apple will test the operating system for a few months until it is released to all users in September.

For more information about iOS 16, watchOS 9 and macOS 13, here are my articles about it:

Devices supported by iPadOS 16

One of the most common questions people ask themselves every year is whether or not Apple will discontinue support for older iPad models. With the release of iPadOS 15 last year, Apple has maintained compatibility with all devices supported by iPadOS 14, while limiting many functions, so rest assured.

According to rumors, Apple plans to abandon support for the original iPhone 6s and iPhone SE. In that case, iPadOS 16 may not be compatible with iPad mini 4, iPad Air 2, iPad (5th generation) and early iPad Pro models.

Supported devices

Here is the list of iPads that will surely be supported by iPadOS 16:

  • iPad Pro 12.9" (5th generation);
  • iPad Pro 11" (3rd generation);
  • iPad Pro 12.9" (4th generation);
  • iPad Pro 11" (2nd generation);
  • iPad Pro 12.9" (3rd generation);
  • iPad Pro 11" (1st generation);
  • iPad Pro 12.9" (2nd generation);
  • iPad Pro 10.5" (2nd generation);
  • iPad Air (5th generation);
  • iPad Air (4th generation);
  • iPad Air (3rd generation);
  • iPad Mini (6th generation);
  • iPad Mini (5th generation);
  • iPad (9th generation);
  • iPad (eighth generation);
  • iPad (7th generation);
  • iPad (6th generation);

New features with iPadOS 16

Basically, there are two main features expected for iPadOS 16:

  • a new interface for managing the multitasking
  • a renewed notification design

New notification design

Notifications are one of the essential components of the functioning of our beloved iPhones and iPads and it is interesting to analyze the way in which, in the last two years, Apple has made numerous changes to the iOS notification system, with the introduction of features such as the summary of notifications and focus mode.

It seems, however, that Apple is still not happy with the current notification implementation and is planning further changes for this year.

Let's hope this is the right time for Web App notifications.

New multitasking interface

Let's face it, One of the biggest limitations of iPad is precisely the management of multitasking which is watering everywhere and for years, especially users of the iPad Pro models, have been asking Apple to improve their user experience.

And, despite the introduction of Slide Over and Split View, we're not there yet.

Let's hope this is the year of Windows in iPadOS, a solution as simple as it is trivial that could really improve the iPad experience with larger screens.

MacOS apps on iPad

We don't have any Pro apps in the App Store, that's a fact and The lack of applications like Final Cut can be felt a lot, especially on iPad Pro models with Apple Silicon M1 that have nothing to envy to MacBooks.

Conclusions

In short, there are many news and the expectations are at 3000 for this new version of the iPad operating system.

I would settle for even just the renewed multitasking but also a external monitor support It wouldn't be bad, in 2022 it's not acceptable to have an iPad interface that doesn't adapt automatically.

In any case, June 6 is near and I can't wait to see WWDC 2022.

And you? What do you expect from iPadOS 16?
